In July 2016 I spent an afternoon in Eminönü, which is the part of the old city near the mouth of Golden Horn. Most of these were taken in or around the New Mosque (built in the 16th-17th centuries). While street photography is not really my thing, this was an exceptionally fruitful day.
All of these were taken in front of a refective metal hoarding erected for restoration work on the New Mosque. As a result, the people passing by were lighted in a dramatic way. Eminonu, Istanbul

Photos from a Saturday afternoon spent in Kadıköy and Eminönü. In fact, it was the day when I bought my new Fuji X-Pro 2. I spent some time walking around and sitting in cafes in Kadıköy, and then took the ferry to Eminönü. I bought a new SD card in one of the camera shops in Sirkeci and took the ferry back to Kadıköy where I found the exit from the car park completely blocked in the rush hour, so I spent some more time sitting around at a Starbucks.

Gulls are suprisingly large up close. Kinda scary, actually.
These are "stuffed mussels", filled with a mussel pillav. These days one of the riskier street foods, as you can't be sure where the mussels were collected.
One of those urban encounters of the third kind.
They follow the ferries to fish in their wake, I guess. Still, this one seemed to be curious about the passangers, as well.
This lady was trying to get down the stairs on the ferry, with apparent difficulty. A few seconds later a young girl offered help.
A simple pleasure.
This vendor has placed his wares on a grid, I guess for ease of counting when filling an order, and maybe also as a way to keep tally of the total sales. The visual factory at work!
I guess it is one of the archtypical views of Istanbul.
In October and December 2016 I spent two long weekends in Paris. I have been there before, but many years ago and it was fun rediscovering old favorites (like the Louvre) and discovering new ones (Rodin Museum).

I visited China in September 2016. First I stayed for a few days in Shanghai for a conference, and then travelled for a week in Zhanghjiajie and Guilin to take pictures.
I thought most of the resulting photos would be of the fantastic landscapes of the last two places, but it turned out that the streets and people of Shanghai and these places were at least as interesting as the landscapes.
The gallery and the captions still need some work.

Pamukkale is a UNESCO World Heritage site with hot springs and travertines, shallow pools or shelves formed by the carbonate minerals from the waters of the said springs. The ancient city of Hierapolis is also located here.
When I visited Pamukkale in December 2015 I learned that the water from the springs is 'rationed' among the various sections of the travertines and as luck would have it, the famous blue pools were nowhere to be seen except in some distant section. Otherwise it was an excellent day trip.
Nice view of the traventines and the surrounding area.
They are supposed to be filled with shallow pools of blue water but it's rationed to keep them all whiter than white.
Finally, some blue water! I guess it was this patch's turn to get watered.
Some green in the middle of all the white.
I decided to take some oof pictures of the people milling about on the travertines.
You can walk on the travertines in designated places.

This is one of only a handful of portraits that I took in my 25 years of photography (excluding friends & family snapshots, ofc.) I was going around in Berkeley, taking my usual 'abstract' photos, when I saw this tiny old lady planting a flagpole on her neatly kept front lawn. I asked her if I could take a pic of her, and she agreed. Here is the result. I still feel a bit guilty about not being able to give her a copy as I had promised. Let me know if you recognize her.
